Devin Singletary broke a 30-yard touchdown run with 7:25 left in overtime, one snap after Cam Skattebo ripped off 42 yards, and the New York Giants beat the Houston Texans 27-21 at NRG Stadium on Sunday, October 25.

The win sends New York into its bye at 4-2-1 and alone on top of the NFC East, and it came in J.J. McCarthy’s first start for the club. Houston fell to 2-5 and is still looking for a home win after four tries.

How it was decided

Houston got the ball first in overtime and had to punt. The Giants took over at their own 28, and Skattebo found a crease on the first snap, ran through the secondary and slid to the turf at the Houston 30 with the Giants already in field goal range. Singletary, who spent the 2023 season with the Texans, took the next handoff the rest of the way to end it.

The Texans had forced the extra period with 52 seconds left in regulation, when C.J. Stroud found Xavier Hutchinson for a 3-yard touchdown on third-and-goal.

Every score

  • First quarter: Giants, Tyrone Tracy Jr. 2-yard run on the opening drive, 7-0 New York.
  • First quarter: Texans, field goal, 7-3.
  • Second quarter: Texans, field goal, 7-6.
  • Second quarter: Giants, Jameis Winston 1-yard quarterback sneak, 14-6 New York.
  • Second quarter, before halftime: Texans, Stroud 6-yard pass to Marvin Harrison Jr., Stroud two-point pass to Cade Stover, 14-14.
  • Fourth quarter, 8:55: Giants, Skattebo 16-yard run, 21-14 New York.
  • Fourth quarter, 0:52: Texans, Stroud 3-yard pass to Hutchinson, 21-21.
  • Overtime, 7:25: Giants, Singletary 30-yard run, 27-21 New York.

Turning points

New York opened with a 42-yard strike from McCarthy to Malik Nabers that set up Tracy’s touchdown. The Giants then left points on the field: Dominic Zvada pushed a 56-yard try wide right late in the first quarter and missed again from 46 yards, wide right, as the first half ran out. Thomas Fidone II’s 29-yard catch set up Winston’s short-yardage score, one of four sneaks he ran in the game, before Houston tied it at the break.

The third quarter was scoreless. Skattebo broke the deadlock by shedding three tacklers on his 16-yard run. Houston’s defense struggled to get off the field, and the Texans’ own offense converted only 3 of 12 third downs.

The numbers

McCarthy completed 20 of 28 passes for 252 yards and a 99.1 passer rating. Nabers caught seven passes for 111 yards, his fourth straight 100-yard game, and Malachi Fields added four for 83. Skattebo, who did not get a single carry a week earlier, set a career high with 124 yards on 17 attempts. New York ran for a season-high 188 yards at 5.5 per carry, and four different Giants ran for touchdowns, which last happened for the club in 1950. The Giants also held the ball for 35:50.

On defense, Micah McFadden, starting with Tremaine Edmunds on injured reserve, made 10 tackles, two of them for loss. Rookie Arvell Reese added seven and half a sack and reached 50 tackles through seven games, a club rookie record. Cornerback Deonte Banks shadowed Nico Collins, who managed a single four-yard reception. Stroud finished with two touchdown passes but a season-low 153 passing yards, and Houston ran for 84 yards on 25 carries, 66 of them by Woody Marks.

Tracy left in the second quarter with a hamstring injury, and Houston lost receiver and returner Jaylin Noel to turf toe in the fourth. Skattebo said afterward that the slide was not by design. He told Dan Graziano that he felt something in his hamstring, then added, “Good thing we have a bye week.”

What comes next

Both clubs are off in Week 8. The Giants return at the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, November 8, at 1:00 p.m. EST, and the Texans visit the Los Angeles Chargers that day at 4:05 p.m. EST. The result and drive detail are in the Giants-Texans Game Center, and the latest statuses are on the injury page.
