Ten touchdown passes in three games have New England on a winning streak, but the quarterback spent his postgame session on missed throws, ball security and A.J. Brown.

Drake Maye has now thrown at least three touchdown passes in three consecutive games, and the New England Patriots have won all three. The last Patriots quarterback to put together that kind of run was Tom Brady in 2014, Mike Reiss noted on Monday.

The quarterback was not in a celebrating mood after beating the New York Jets 26-19 in Foxborough on Sunday. Asked to assess it, he went straight to what went wrong. “It was sloppy, it wasn’t clean,” Maye said, pointing to two lost fumbles and a slow start, and he agreed with coach Mike Vrabel’s view that New England had been fortunate.

Ten touchdowns in three weeks

The streak began on Sunday, October 4, when Maye hit Romeo Doubs twice and Efton Chism III once, the last a 23-yard strike late in a 29-26 win over the Buffalo Bills. A week later he was close to flawless against the Las Vegas Raiders, completing 26 of 34 for 374 yards with four touchdown passes and a rushing score in a 45-17 rout.

Against the Jets he finished 18 of 32 for 235 yards with scoring throws to Doubs from 42 yards, DeMario Douglas from 9 and Hunter Henry from 7. He did not throw an interception and was not sacked. That is ten touchdown passes over the three games, and New England has climbed to 4-2.

Maye still found fault with his own accuracy. He said he left a throw high for Douglas and another low for A.J. Brown, and that he would have liked to place the long touchdown pass better so Doubs did not have to dive for it. He credited his rhythm to trusting what he sees on film and to his working relationship with offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, and said he feels he has time to stand in when the pocket is clean.

Sticking with A.J. Brown

Brown, back from injured reserve, caught three of the ten passes thrown his way for 27 yards and had several drops. Maye made a point of backing him. “I told him I’m going to keep coming his way,” he said, adding that Brown would be among the top players in any game he suits up for. He also praised an offensive line that lost Morgan Moses, Alijah Vera-Tucker and Ben Brown during the game and still carried the final 13-play drive on the ground.

What comes next

The Patriots have a short week to keep the run going. New England plays at Chicago on Thursday night, October 22, with kickoff at 8:15 p.m. EDT. The 2-4 Jets welcome Miami to MetLife Stadium for a 1:00 p.m. EDT start on October 25.
