Bryce Young threw two touchdown passes to Tommy Tremble, the second a 19-yarder that put the game away with 6:33 left, and the Carolina Panthers beat the injury-depleted Philadelphia Eagles 25-14 on Sunday, October 18, at Lincoln Financial Field.

Carolina improved to 3-2 despite 13 penalties for 149 yards. Philadelphia, without Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley and Barkley’s two backups, fell to 2-4 and has now lost four games in a row.

How Carolina built the lead

The Eagles’ afternoon started badly. Tanner McKee, making his third career start with Hurts on injured reserve because of a blood clot in his calf, was sacked by Bobby Okereke for an 11-yard loss on the first snap. Philadelphia punted on its first five possessions and had 37 yards in the first quarter.

Ryan Fitzgerald’s 47-yard field goal opened the scoring, and Young found Tremble from 12 yards out with 8:08 left in the second quarter for a 10-0 lead. Philadelphia answered with its best drive of the half, 78 yards in 10 plays, and Dameon Pierce scored from 2 yards to make it 10-7 at the break. Fitzgerald then hit from 52 yards early in the third quarter, his 11th straight make to start the season.

The decisive march began at the Carolina 10 late in the third quarter. Facing third-and-8, Young hit Jalen Coker for 32 yards. Chuba Hubbard later converted a fourth-and-1 with a 19-yard run, and he finished the 14-play, 92-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown at 13:34 of the fourth quarter. The two-point try failed, leaving it 19-7.

The Eagles’ push and Carolina’s answer

McKee responded with a 69-yard drive that ended in a 19-yard touchdown pass to DeVonta Smith, who was back from a hamstring injury that cost him two games, cutting the deficit to 19-14 with 10:42 left. The defense then forced a three-and-out, but the next drive stalled after a fumbled snap pushed the Eagles backward.

Carolina needed four plays and 1:51 to answer. Young’s second scoring pass to Tremble restored an 11-point lead, and the Panthers’ defense sacked McKee again on the following series.

“Whether it was guys in the wrong spot, I’ve got to get them fixed or a missed call, I’ve got to get it fixed,” McKee said.

Young, who heard MVP chants from the Panthers fans who stayed to the end, credited the traveling support. He called the support “huge.”
