The Los Angeles Chargers signed veteran quarterback Jake Browning to the practice squad, Tom Pelissero reported, adding experience behind Justin Herbert after Trey Lance went on injured reserve with a groin injury.
Pelissero’s report came Tuesday after the Chargers worked out Browning and other free agents. The agreement is a practice-squad deal, giving Los Angeles a third quarterback option while D.J. Uiagalelei remains on the 53-man roster as the active backup.
Why Browning fits this week
Lance’s IR move left Uiagalelei as the only healthy backup for Sunday’s loss to the Denver Broncos. Browning, 30, spent four seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals and signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in free agency before losing the backup job to Jalon Daniels and being released after the preseason.
In 17 career games with 10 starts for Cincinnati from 2023 through 2025, Browning completed 68.5 percent of his passes for 2,707 yards, 18 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. His strongest stretch came in 2023 filling in for Joe Burrow; his 2025 fill-in work was rough enough that Cincinnati brought in Joe Flacco.
Next steps for the Chargers
Browning opens on the practice squad and can be elevated if the club wants another veteran arm available on game day. Whether he eventually displaces Uiagalelei as QB2 will be a practice-week decision as Los Angeles prepares for the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Chargers also brought Luke Grimm back to the practice squad in the same evaluation window, Garafolo reported, after a broad Tuesday workout that included several receivers and Kyle Trask at quarterback.
