San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel will undergo an MRI on his right hamstring on Monday, Ian Rapoport reported, one day after he limped out of the 32-29 win over the Seattle Seahawks.

The scan will decide how long the 49ers go without another playmaker. San Francisco is 5-0, but it has reached that record while its receiver room is steadily emptied by injuries, and Samuel was one of the few healthy veterans left.

How it happened

Samuel had appeared to be favoring the hamstring before the play that ended his day. With a little more than five minutes left in the third quarter, he tried to turn the corner, stepped awkwardly and went down as linebacker Drake Thomas brought him to the turf. The ball came loose at the 49ers’ 35, Seattle recovered, and Jason Myers kicked a 48-yard field goal that pushed the Seahawks ahead 26-21.

He needed a few minutes on the turf, eventually left on his own feet, and was declared out for the rest of the afternoon. Brock Purdy answered with a 12-play, 74-yard touchdown drive, and Eddy Pineiro’s 44-yard field goal with 1:56 left won it. The full story of the game is in our 49ers-Seahawks recap.

Before the injury Samuel caught two of his three targets for 21 yards, ran twice for 4 yards and returned two kickoffs for 50 yards, the longest a 33-yarder.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said after the game that he did not yet know how serious the strain was, and that more tests within a day would set a timeline. The 49ers have not announced a diagnosis, and it is not yet known whether Samuel will miss games or need a stint on injured reserve.

A receiver room running out of bodies

By the end of Sunday’s game San Francisco was down to four available receivers: Mike Evans, Brandin Cooks, Jordan Watkins and Jacob Cowing, who hurt an ankle on a kick return but finished the game. Evans carried the passing game in Seattle with seven catches for 113 yards and a touchdown, and Cooks caught the go-ahead 7-yard score in the fourth quarter.

Ricky Pearsall is out for the season after knee surgery, while De’Zhaun Stribling and Demarcus Robinson are on injured reserve with ankle injuries. Christian Kirk remains on injured reserve with a calf injury, and Shanahan’s first assessment was that he is unlikely to practice this week. George Kittle and Christian McCaffrey remain Purdy’s most dependable options outside Evans.

What comes next

The 49ers get an extra day to prepare before hosting the Washington Commanders on Monday, October 19, at 8:15 p.m. EDT. Their first injury report of the week will show whether Samuel can take part in any practice. Seattle, now 3-2, plays at the Denver Broncos on Thursday, October 15.
