The veteran returner joined the active roster only a week ago; Charlie Jones and Tyrone Tracy Jr. are set to take over kickoffs and punts.

The New York Giants are moving returner Braxton Berrios to injured reserve with a foot injury he suffered in Sunday’s 36–24 win over the Arizona Cardinals, Adam Schefter reported Monday, October 5.

The Giants had not announced the move by Tuesday morning. Once it is processed, Berrios must miss at least four games, which takes the veteran out of the return job only a week after New York gave him a full-time spot on its 53-man roster.

How the injury happened

The Giants called Berrios questionable to come back during the second half, then declared him out. He fielded two punts for a loss of two yards before leaving. The Giants went on to win the game when cornerback Deonte Banks returned an interception 98 yards for a touchdown on the final play.

The veteran’s path to the roster this season was unusual. New York signed him to a one-year contract in June, after Gunner Olszewski tore his ACL, to fill the return role. He was released before the cut to 53, then elevated from the practice squad for each of the first three games, the most a club is allowed. A permanent place on the 53 came on September 29, when New York cut Odell Beckham Jr. and promoted Berrios in the same set of moves.

Berrios, a first-team All-Pro returner with the New York Jets in 2021, had five kickoff returns for 138 yards and two punt returns for 12 yards across the first three weeks. He had not caught a pass this season.

Who returns kicks now

Charlie Jones, promoted from the practice squad on September 29, took over after Berrios left on Sunday and averaged 23 yards on three kickoff returns and 14.5 yards on two punt returns. Jones and running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. are expected to share the duties. Berrios’ placement also opens a roster spot, and the Giants have not said how they will fill it.

What comes next

The Giants (3–1) visit the Washington Commanders on Sunday, October 11, at 1:00 p.m. EDT. Every roster move is tracked on the WhyNFL transactions page, and the latest designations are on the injury report.
