Saquon Barkley’s afternoon ended early Sunday when the Philadelphia Eagles ruled their starting running back out of the game against the Los Angeles Rams with a hamstring injury. The game-day update did not provide a return timetable for future games.

Barkley left the Week 4 matchup at Lincoln Financial Field in the first quarter after a six-yard run. He was initially listed as questionable to return before being downgraded to out during the second quarter, leaving Philadelphia to finish the game without its leading back.

Philadelphia adjusts without its starting back

Tank Bigsby immediately became part of the response, gaining seven yards for a first down on the play after Barkley’s departure. Bigsby later left the game with a hip injury, further reducing Philadelphia’s running-back depth. The offense had begun the day without several established contributors.

Wide receivers DeVonta Smith and Hollywood Brown were inactive with hamstring and ankle injuries, respectively. Tight end Dallas Goedert also remained sidelined by a knee injury suffered against Tennessee in Week 2. Philadelphia elevated Zach Ertz and Josiah Deguara from the practice squad Saturday to add depth at tight end.

A productive history against the Rams

Barkley entered Sunday’s game with a strong record against Los Angeles. In his previous three meetings with the Rams as an Eagle, including the postseason, he had rushed for 506 yards and four touchdowns while averaging 7.2 yards per carry. That stretch included a franchise-record 255 rushing yards in the 2024 regular season and 205 in the divisional playoff meeting that followed.

His early-season production also made him a central part of Philadelphia’s plans. Through three games, Barkley averaged 5.1 yards per carry and had topped 80 rushing yards twice. He ran for 82 yards in Monday night’s 27-7 loss at Chicago, with 73 coming before halftime.

Eagles lose their halftime lead

The Eagles continued to build their passing attack after losing Barkley. Jalen Hurts connected with Darius Cooper for two second-quarter touchdowns, helping Philadelphia take a 20-10 lead into halftime. The Rams then scored the game’s final 14 points to win 24-20, leaving both teams at 2-2.

Philadelphia also lost cornerback Quinyon Mitchell to a knee injury and outside linebacker Jonathan Greenard to an ankle injury. The postgame injury summary did not provide a recovery timetable for Barkley or Bigsby.

The why matters.
