Marvin Harrison Jr. finally faced the Houston microphones after his first practice as a Texan, and the message was short on drama and long on the reunion that brought him here. Asked how much he was enjoying a fresh start next to C.J. Stroud, the receiver did not reach for a complicated answer.
“I’m excited to be here,” Harrison said. “I’m excited to help this team win games. I’m excited to be with C.J. again and help C.J. to the best of my abilities.” He said he had always watched the Texans from afar — mostly watching Stroud — and that lining up with his old Ohio State quarterback again felt different in person. “It’s pretty surreal to be able to play with him now again, and just help him out the best I can.”
Learning beside Nico, leaning on old chemistry
Harrison sized up sharing a room with Nico Collins as a chance to be a sponge. “I want to help him out. I want to learn from him. I think he’s one of the best receivers in this league,” he said. “It was my job to kind of just be a sponge and soak up the most I can from him.”
On why the situation can unlock what he wants to be, he pointed to the whole package — the roster, the staff, and especially a quarterback he already has rapport with. “Being with a quarterback that you have rapport with and had success with in the past is always great,” he said. Familiarity with Stroud’s body language, he added, should speed the crash course in Houston’s playbook even before they see live snaps together in a game.
How he found out, and what he will not debate
Harrison said his agent told him about the trade before it broke publicly, with DeMeco Ryans also reaching out. Preference of destination was never really his call. “When you get traded, you don’t really have that option,” he said.
Asked about viral clips and labels from his Arizona tape, he declined the debate. “Everybody has their own opinions,” Harrison said. “I know who I am as a player. I know who I am as a person. However people want to label me or think of me, that’s their opinion.” His first read on Ryans was simpler: energy, the kind a defensive coach brings every day that the whole building feeds off.
With Ryans already saying he will play in London against the Jaguars, Harrison’s season goal stayed one sentence. “Help the team win. Period.”
