Ramsey is following last week's broken-wrist routine, while Dean and Rico Dowdle were limited and Keeanu Benton was a new DNP.

Pittsburgh Steelers safety Jalen Ramsey did not practice Wednesday because of his wrist, but the first Week 6 injury report carried an encouraging sign at cornerback: Jamel Dean was limited after missing last Sunday’s win over the Indianapolis Colts with an ankle injury.

Ramsey is playing through a broken wrist and followed the same pattern last week, sitting out Wednesday before returning for limited work on Thursday and Friday. He then made nine tackles against Indianapolis. He is expected to play Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Wednesday’s report

  • Did not practice: S Jalen Ramsey (wrist), DL Keeanu Benton (ankle), DL Cam Heyward (rest), WR Ben Skowronek (calf), WR Roman Wilson (finger)
  • Limited: CB Jamel Dean (ankle), RB Rico Dowdle (toe), S DeShon Elliott (knee), EDGE T.J. Watt (rest)
  • Full: none

Dean and Dowdle trending

Dean aggravated his ankle in Week 4 and was inactive against the Colts. Getting on the field in any capacity Wednesday is a step forward, though not a guarantee. If he cannot go, rookie Daylen Everette and veteran Asante Samuel Jr. would again start on the outside.

Running back Rico Dowdle has missed three games with a dislocated toe and now has a chance to return. Mike McCarthy has made clear that Jaylen Warren, named a Week 5 Player of the Week, remains the feature back, but Dowdle would add depth to the rotation.

Wilson and Skowronek already ruled out

McCarthy ruled out wide receivers Roman Wilson and Ben Skowronek on Monday. Alex Kozora reported that Wilson dislocated a finger trying to make a catch late in the first half against Indianapolis, while Skowronek hurt his calf after being tripped covering a punt.

Keeanu Benton is a new name on the report with an ankle injury. He finished the Colts game, and there has been no word on severity. Pittsburgh is already without defensive lineman Derrick Harmon, who is on injured reserve with a foot injury. Heyward and Watt are on veteran rest days and are expected to play.

Elliott remains on injured reserve but returned to practice last week when his 21-day window opened. The Steelers can activate him as soon as Saturday or wait another week.

What’s next

The Steelers visit Tampa Bay at 1:00 p.m. EDT on Sunday, October 18. The Buccaneers have leaned toward another start for rookie Jalon Daniels while Baker Mayfield’s thumb heals. Thursday’s report will show whether Ramsey repeats last week’s limited-practice path and whether Dean can take another step.

The why matters.
