The shoulder injury Elijah Arroyo took in Thursday’s overtime loss at Denver will keep him off the field for a while, Jeremy Fowler reported on Monday, and the Seattle Seahawks are still working out how long the second-year tight end will be gone.

Fowler added that the absence could be an extended one. The Seahawks have not announced a diagnosis or a timeline, and the club’s first practice report of the week will be the first official look at his status before Sunday night’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

How it happened

Arroyo was hurt in the second quarter at Empower Field at Mile High and was quickly ruled doubtful to return. He did not come back, and Seattle went on to lose 17-14 in overtime to fall to 3-3. The next morning Mike Macdonald said Arroyo was going through imaging and tests and that there was “no update yet.” Four days later, the signals point to more than a short absence.

Seattle’s response at tight end

The clearest sign came before Fowler’s report: the Seahawks signed veteran tight end Josiah Deguara to their practice squad on Monday. Deguara, 29, is in his seventh season. Green Bay drafted him in the third round in 2020, and he caught 47 passes for 436 yards and two touchdowns in four years there before short spells in Jacksonville, Arizona and, this autumn, Philadelphia. As a practice squad player he can be elevated for Sunday if Seattle needs another tight end.

The rest of the injury picture

Seattle is waiting on better news elsewhere. Right guard Anthony Bradford has missed four games on injured reserve and is eligible to come back, and Macdonald said last week he has “a really good chance” of playing against Kansas City. Rookie running back Jadarian Price, also on injured reserve, has to sit at least one more game but is progressing well. Zach Charbonnet has returned to practice but has not been activated from the physically unable to perform list. Linebackers Drake Thomas and Chazz Surratt were ruled out on the eve of the Denver game.

What comes next

The Seahawks host the unbeaten Chiefs at Lumen Field on Sunday, October 25, at 8:20 p.m. EDT, then welcome the Chicago Bears on Monday night, November 2. Follow every designation on the WhyNFL injury page.
