The Baltimore Ravens took an unusual extra step to get the Cam Jurgens trade over the line. The team sent a doctor and a trainer to Philadelphia early Wednesday morning to conduct the center’s physical on site, then announced the deal later that afternoon once he passed, , citing Adam Schefter.

The caution has history behind it. Baltimore backed out of a deal for Raiders edge rusher Maxx Crosby in March after he failed his physical because of long-term concerns about his knee, a reversal that landed after free agency had already opened. The Ravens also sent cornerback Jaire Alexander to Philadelphia at last year’s trade deadline, only for Alexander to retire before playing a snap for the Eagles.

Jurgens, 26, underwent back surgery in 2025, and the two teams “jointly agreed upon this plan,” per the report, an approach that could catch on around the league for deals involving players with injury questions. The trade announcement notably carried no “pending physical” tag, which would have invited speculation about another cancelled deal.

Baltimore looked into other centers after its loss to the Rams before reaching out to the Eagles. The Ravens liked Jurgens coming out of Nebraska in 2022, per Tom Pelissero, and he now profiles as Lamar Jackson’s long-term center if his back holds up.

Jurgens had started every game for Philadelphia this season before the move. The Eagles, who also saw right tackle Lane Johnson retire this week, now head into their London game against Jacksonville with two new starters on the offensive line.

The why matters.
