Reading this profile
The details below are dated roster facts. Roster status, practice participation, and game-day availability are different; this profile does not turn one into another.
Career background expanded October 2, 2026.
Texas Tech and the Chiefs’ draft investment
Patrick Mahomes won the 2016 Sammy Baugh Award at Texas Tech before declaring for the NFL Draft in January 2017. He finished his college career with 11,252 passing yards. The Kansas City Chiefs moved from the 27th pick to No. 10 in the 2017 draft to select him, sending Buffalo their first- and third-round choices that year plus their 2018 first-round pick.
What changed when Mahomes became the starter?
Mahomes became Kansas City’s regular starter in 2018, his second NFL season. He passed for 5,097 yards and 50 touchdowns that regular season and won the league MVP award. The dates matter: he entered the league in 2017, while the full-season starting breakthrough came a year later.
League MVP and Super Bowl milestones
2018 season: league MVP after the 50-touchdown passing season.
Super Bowl LIV: Super Bowl MVP in Kansas City’s championship victory over San Francisco.
2022 season: another league MVP award and 5,250 regular-season passing yards, followed by Super Bowl LVII MVP.
Super Bowl LVIII: another Super Bowl MVP award.
Regular-season MVP and Super Bowl MVP measure different stages of a campaign. Keeping the awards separate also avoids folding playoff production into annual passing totals. Use the dated tables below and the NFL statistics hub when comparing seasons; these milestones explain the career trajectory without treating an old total as a live career count.

Regular-season records. Totals use each recorded season once, even when team splits and a combined row are both shown. Rates are recalculated from the counted totals. A dash means a value is missing or cannot be calculated reliably; these records do not establish complete career coverage. The current-season row is as of the update time above and can differ from the season statistics section, which adds up box scores through the latest recorded final.

The veteran receiver's agent expects a signing within days, a year after a severe knee injury, and Kansas City is among the teams in contact after losing two wideouts in Las Vegas.
The receiver dislocated his ankle on a 55-yard catch in the 30–27 win over the Raiders and faces three to four months of recovery, leaving a narrow path back for the postseason.
