First downs & scoring opportunities

UPDATED Updated Oct 4, 2026, 10:47 am EDT
DEN at KC · Week 1 · Completed-game play record
StatisticDENKC
First downs (play record)918
Third-down conversions2 / 12 (16.7%)9 / 17 (52.9%)
Fourth-down conversions0 / 1 (0.0%)2 / 3 (66.7%)
Touchdowns / inside-20 drives1 / 2 (50.0%)3 / 5 (60.0%)

Conversions count recorded successful and failed attempts; punts, field goals and nullified downs do not become attempts just because they occur on fourth or third down. First downs count the play record's total, including recorded penalty awards; these can differ from drive-summary counts. An incomplete play record withholds the affected count. Zero opportunities have no percentage.

Inside-20 counts drives where a recorded down starts closer than 20 yards from the opponent's goal line. Reaching only the 20-yard line is excluded. The numerator counts those drives ending in a touchdown for the possessing team, excluding opponent return touchdowns. This is not a count of every touchdown or an official league red-zone ranking.

Drive clocks account for the full game. Play counts use the recorded drive totals; they can differ from the number of events in play-by-play. Return touchdowns are identified separately from the possessing team's drive result.

Game recap

Postgame analysis: Walker’s fourth-down burst separates the Chiefs

Kenneth Walker III turned a fourth-and-one gamble into the defining play as the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Denver Broncos 31–10 at Arrowhead Stadium on September 14, 2026. His 60-yard touchdown early in the third quarter expanded a seven-point lead, while Kansas City’s defense prevented Denver from converting its best second-half field position into a touchdown.

One yard needed, 60 gained

The Chiefs led 14–7 at halftime after Patrick Mahomes’ 13-yard touchdown pass to Rashee Rice. On the opening possession of the second half, Kansas City kept its offense out for fourth-and-one at its own 40. Walker broke free around the left side for the touchdown, making it 21–7 with 12:43 left in the third quarter.

Denver soon had a chance to answer. Brandon Jones intercepted Mahomes and returned the ball to the Kansas City five-yard line. An offensive holding penalty and a sack pushed the Broncos backward, however, and they settled for a 31-yard Wil Lutz field goal. A possession that began five yards from the end zone had produced only three points.

Kansas City responded with its own field goal after a 59-yard completion to Travis Kelce. Felix Anudike-Uzomah then forced a Bo Nix fumble, recovered by Chris Jones, and Mahomes found Walker for a two-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter. That sequence widened the lead to 31–10.

The defense supports Walker’s debut

Walker rushed 23 times for 173 yards and added 18 receiving yards, scoring once each way in his first regular-season game for Kansas City. Mahomes passed for 184 yards and two touchdowns and also scored on a 15-yard run after Mansoor Delane intercepted Nix on Denver’s opening possession.

Nix answered that early touchdown with a 19-yard scoring pass to Evan Engram, but Denver never reached the end zone again. The Broncos finished with 176 total yards, went two-for-12 on third down and surrendered four sacks. Kansas City gained 220 yards on the ground alone. The opener gave the Chiefs a division win built around a decisive rushing play, two defensive takeaways and a goal-to-go stand that kept Denver from closing the gap.
