The NFL is considering moving the Philadelphia Eagles’ Week 8 game at Washington off NBC’s Sunday Night Football, Rob Tornoe reported. The game is currently set for Sunday, Nov. 1, at 8:20 pm ET at Northwest Stadium.
Why it is on the table
Philadelphia is 2-3 after three straight losses, and Washington is 1-3-1 after a 27-27 tie with the New York Giants in Week 5. The two clubs have three wins combined. The Eagles won the first meeting 24-22 in Week 1.
The deadline
A Sunday-night flex through Week 13 needs at least 12 days’ notice, so the league has until Oct. 20 to decide. That leaves one more game for each team: the Eagles host Carolina on Sunday, and the Commanders play at unbeaten San Francisco on Monday night before their Week 7 bye. Philadelphia then hosts Dallas on Monday night in Week 7.
If the game is moved, it would shift to Sunday afternoon and an eligible afternoon game would take its place on NBC. This is Washington’s only scheduled Sunday-night appearance so far; its Weeks 16 to 18 kickoff times have not been set.
Possible replacements
NFL reporter Evan Sidery wrote on Wednesday that the league is seriously considering moving Indianapolis at Jacksonville into the Sunday-night slot. He added that a Philadelphia loss to Carolina would make a flex highly likely. The Jaguars (4-1) play Houston in London this week, and the Colts (2-3) host winless Tennessee. Colts-Jaguars is currently a 1 pm ET game on CBS at EverBank Stadium.
| Option | Records | Current slot |
|---|---|---|
| Eagles at Commanders | 2-3 vs. 1-3-1 | Sunday night, NBC |
| Colts at Jaguars | 2-3 vs. 4-1 | 1 pm ET, CBS |
| Ravens at Bills | 4-1 vs. 4-1 | 1 pm ET, CBS |
| Browns at Steelers | 3-2 vs. 3-2 | 1 pm ET, CBS |
Tornoe also pointed to Baltimore at Buffalo, though that network is likely to protect it. Cleveland at Pittsburgh has been noted as another option, but the Steelers already have a Sunday-night game in Week 10 against Cincinnati, and that review concluded the league may end up keeping Eagles-Commanders in prime time.
The last early-season Sunday-night flex came in 2024, when the league moved Colts-Vikings into Week 9 and pushed Jaguars-Eagles to the afternoon.
The debate comes as Sunday Night Football play-by-play voice Mike Tirico said at an industry event this week that he would like the NFL to flex games far more often, “like the Premier League.”
