A stop at the Miami 1 and a red-zone interception cost New York, which is now 2-5 and 0-8 in AFC East games under Glenn, with the Raiders coming to MetLife next.

Aaron Glenn took the first share of the blame himself after the Jets lost 28-25 to the previously winless Miami Dolphins at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, October 25, a result that leaves New York at 2-5 and Glenn still looking for his first division win as head coach.

“Disappointed in myself, first and foremost,” Glenn said in his postgame news conference, adding that he was highly disappointed in the outcome. Miami arrived without a lead at any point this season. It took one on its opening drive and never trailed.

A game decided at the margins

The Jets spent the afternoon chasing. Malik Willis hit rookie Caleb Douglas for a 7-yard touchdown on Miami’s first possession, Ollie Gordon finished a 14-play drive with a 1-yard run, and Willis scrambled in from 2 yards with six seconds left in the half for a 21-7 lead at the break. In between, Michael Taaffe picked off Geno Smith at the Miami 21, one of the chances New York left on the field.

The second half added more. Smith found Omar Cooper Jr. from 3 yards to make it 21-14, but a later drive reached the Miami 1 and ended in a 33-yard field goal instead of a tying touchdown. When Willis answered with a 63-yard scoring pass to Douglas, who slipped a missed tackle, the Dolphins led 28-17 with 4:44 to play.

New York still came close. Smith converted a fourth-and-4 with a 41-yard throw to Isaiah Davis, and Mason Taylor caught his second touchdown of the day to cut the deficit to three with 3:24 left. Flags wiped out the first two tries at a two-point conversion. Miami then ran out the clock, with Willis keeping the ball himself on fourth-and-1 for the final first down.

The division problem

Smith threw for 287 yards and three touchdowns on 23 of 30 passing, and Braelon Allen ran for 104 yards, but the numbers did not cover a red-zone stop and an interception in scoring range. The loss makes Glenn 0-8 against AFC East opponents since he took over. Miami, meanwhile, gave Jeff Hafley his first win as its coach and left the Chargers as the league’s only winless team.

The Jets also lost defensive tackle T’Vondre Sweat to a knee injury late in the second quarter; he did not return. The full scoring summary is in the Game Center.

What comes next

New York stays home to face the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, November 1, at 1:00 p.m. EST. Matchup details are in the Raiders at Jets Game Center.
