Andrews' first-quarter fumble became a Jessie Bates III touchdown, but Minter credited the tight end's late third-down catches and said he was proud of how he finished.

Jesse Minter stood by Mark Andrews on Monday after a rough start for the veteran tight end in Baltimore’s 30-23 overtime win at Atlanta. Andrews’ first-quarter fumble was punched out by safety Sydney Brown and returned 36 yards for a touchdown by Jessie Bates III, giving the Falcons a 7-3 lead.

A third-quarter two-point pass to Andrews also fell incomplete, and he finished with four catches on six targets for 28 yards. Minter said Andrews “would be the first to tell you that he did not start off the game the way that he wanted to,” adding that Atlanta did “a really good job hunting the ball” at the catch point.

Minter pointed to the finish instead. Andrews made “a couple really big third-down conversions” late, the coach said, one of them on the overtime drive that Tyler Huntley capped with a one-yard sneak. “We know the type of player that he is, the type of worker that he is,” Minter said, saying he was “really proud of Mark for how he played late in the game.”

Through five games Andrews has 22 catches on 30 targets for 177 yards and one touchdown. Baltimore (4-1) visits Cleveland on Sunday, October 18, at 1 p.m. EDT. Lamar Jackson (ankle) did not practice Wednesday and is day-to-day, so Huntley could start again.

The why matters.
