The New York Giants signed offensive lineman Josh Gesky to their practice squad on Wednesday, one day after the Green Bay Packers released him. Jordan Raanan first reported the signing, and Aaron Wilson also confirmed it.

A quick landing spot

Gesky, an undrafted rookie out of Illinois, spent the first five weeks of the season on Green Bay’s practice squad. The Packers released him Tuesday to make room for rookie cornerback Elijah Culp. Green Bay had signed Gesky on May 1 with $215,000 guaranteed — a $15,000 signing bonus plus $200,000 of base salary — among the larger commitments in its undrafted class. He played in all three preseason games, was waived at final cuts on August 30 and returned to the practice squad the next day.

Illinois reunion

The 6-foot-5, roughly 310-pound guard from Manteno, Illinois, made 34 starts in 48 college games, 32 of them at left guard, and earned All-Big Ten honorable mention three straight years. He lined up next to Giants rookie J.C. Davis for two seasons at Illinois; New York drafted Davis in the sixth round (No. 192) in April.

The signing caps a busy two days for the Giants’ practice squad after Tuesday’s promotion of linebacker Malik Harrison to the 53-man roster and the addition of edge rusher Dawuane Smoot. New York hosts the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.

The why matters.
