The Giants running back scored once, broke a 42-yard run in overtime and explained afterward why he went down short of the end zone before Devin Singletary finished it.

Seven days after he watched a loss to New Orleans without a single carry, Cam Skattebo carried the New York Giants in Houston. The running back gained 124 yards on 17 rushes, scored a touchdown and ripped off a 42-yard run in overtime that put Devin Singletary in position to win it, 27-21, on the next snap.

The win lifts New York to 4-2-1 and keeps it on top of the NFC East going into its bye week, and it settles, at least for now, the question of who leads a backfield that was in turmoil seven days ago.

The slide that set up the winner

Overtime began with the Giants at their own 28. Skattebo burst through the line and into the open field, then went to the ground well short of the goal line. Singletary took the following handoff 30 yards for the walk-off touchdown against the team he played for in 2023.

After the game, Skattebo explained that the slide was not a strategic choice. Dan Graziano reported that the running back said he felt something in his hamstring during the run and, knowing the Giants were already in field goal range, decided to get down. Skattebo then added, “Good thing we have a bye week.” The club has not announced any injury.

From the sideline to the center of the offense

His big day arrived at the end of an uncomfortable stretch. Skattebo fumbled in overtime at Washington in Week 5, and he did not get a single carry a week later in a 34-27 loss to the Saints, although John Harbaugh said afterward that the running back had not been benched. Najee Harris, who started that game and then questioned the rotation in public, was released two days later, leaving Skattebo, Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Singletary to share the work.

On Sunday, Skattebo got the first carry of the game and plenty after it. His touchdown came on a 16-yard run in which he broke three tackles to put New York ahead 21-14. The day was not spotless: he drew an unnecessary roughness flag for lowering his helmet into Texans safety M.J. Stewart, a little more than three weeks after he was fined for a similar hit against Tennessee.

The Giants won as clear underdogs, on a day when J.J. McCarthy made his first start at quarterback for the team. Skattebo’s full season line is on his WhyNFL player page.

What comes next

The bye gives Skattebo time to rest the hamstring before New York visits the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, November 8, at 1 p.m. EST. The result and every scoring play are in the Game Center.

The why matters.
