Hurts practiced fully but explained the calf injury from the Rams game; Barkley and DeVonta Smith (now hamstring and toe) sat out again, and Dickerson is taking his return day to day.

Jalen Hurts was a full participant in Wednesday’s practice, but the Philadelphia Eagles still listed their quarterback with a calf injury. Hurts explained it for the first time: he hurt the calf in the Week 4 game against the Los Angeles Rams, and it is the reason he came out onto the field so late before kickoff in London.

Hurts suggested he had been on a stationary bike keeping the muscle warm while the rest of the team warmed up before the 19-17 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Jeff McLane noted that Hurts was not added to the practice report that week until Friday.

24 names on the report

Hurts was one of 24 Eagles on Wednesday’s report ahead of Sunday’s home game against the Carolina Panthers. Six did not practice, 11 were limited and seven were full. Receiver DeVonta Smith now has a toe injury listed along with the hamstring that has cost him the past two games.

  • Did not practice: running back Saquon Barkley (hamstring), defensive back Michael Carter II (abdomen), outside linebacker Jalyx Hunt (knee/ankle), center Drew Kendall (knee), running back Will Shipley (foot), receiver DeVonta Smith (hamstring/toe)
  • Limited: cornerback Jakorian Bennett (knee), receiver Marquise Brown (ankle), tight end Grant Calcaterra (back), guard Landon Dickerson (knee), outside linebacker AJ Epenesa (back), safety Marcus Epps (groin), outside linebacker Jonathan Greenard (ankle), tight end EJ Jenkins (toe), guard Tyler Steen (shoulder), tight end Eli Stowers (quad), receiver Dontayvion Wicks (hamstring)
  • Full: linebacker Zack Baun (shoulder), linebacker Jihaad Campbell (knee/wrist), defensive tackle Jalen Carter (wrist), outside linebacker Arnold Ebiketie (shoulder), quarterback Jalen Hurts (calf), tackle Fred Johnson (knee), safety Andrew Mukuba (shoulder)

Dickerson takes it day to day

Four of the limited players are coming off injured reserve: Bennett, Calcaterra, Dickerson and Stowers all had their 21-day practice windows opened this week. Dickerson told Dave Zangaro that his first practice back went well and his knee feels good, but he is not sure yet whether he will play Sunday. He told reporters he is taking the return day to day and does not think the knee should be a major thing to come back from.

The backfield is the worry

Barkley and Smith both sat out again, so Thursday’s report is the next checkpoint for each. With Tank Bigsby on injured reserve and Shipley out for multiple weeks, Dameon Pierce is next in line if Barkley cannot go. The Eagles (2-3) are trying to stop a slide against a Panthers team (2-2) coming off its bye with Bryce Young back at full practice.

The why matters.
