Two Indianapolis Colts starters left Wednesday’s practice to be checked for concussions. Right guard Matt Goncalves and rookie defensive end Jaylahn Tuimoloau were both listed as limited with a concussion evaluation, which means they were pulled from the session to be examined. The team did not say whether either player passed.
Stephen Holder said reporters were not present when it happened, so it is not clear whether the two were hurt in practice or were showing symptoms carried over from Sunday. Mike Chappell called both situations worth monitoring. Thursday’s report should show whether either is in the concussion protocol.
12 names on the first report
The Colts (2-3) listed 12 players as they opened preparation for Sunday’s AFC South game against the Tennessee Titans. Five did not practice, five were limited and three were full, although several of those listings were scheduled veteran rest days rather than injuries.
- Did not practice: receiver Keenan Allen (rest), linebacker Jaylon Carlies (ribs), receiver Ashton Dulin (hamstring), right tackle Jalen Travis (ankle), cornerback Charvarius Ward Sr. (rest)
- Limited: receiver Josh Downs (rest, hamstring), guard Matt Goncalves (concussion evaluation), running back Jonathan Taylor (rest), defensive end Jaylahn Tuimoloau (concussion evaluation)
- Full: quarterback Daniel Jones (ankle), tight end Will Mallory (thumb), receiver Darius Slayton (knee)
Carlies and Travis are the injuries to watch
Carlies missed all three practices last week and sat out the loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers with the rib injury, and the Colts have been rotating Akeem Davis-Gaither, Austin Ajiake, CJ Allen and Bryce Boettcher at his weakside linebacker spot. That is part of why they brought back Germaine Pratt on the practice squad this week.
Travis hurt his ankle against Pittsburgh, missed some snaps and returned to the game. He has started at right tackle all season after working as the swing tackle last year, and the depth behind him is thin. Nathan Brown listed Ward, Allen, Dulin, Carlies and Travis as the players he did not see working on Wednesday.
Jones full, Downs did individual work
Jones was listed with an ankle injury but took a full practice. Downs, who leads the healthy receivers with 20 catches for 249 yards, was limited with both rest and a hamstring listed, but Holder said he did individual drills and the problem does not look serious. Allen was limited in the first two practices last week with a groin injury before going full on Friday.
There was some good news at receiver. Slayton was a full participant after a knee injury kept him out of the Steelers game, and he could make his Colts debut. Indianapolis has been without Alec Pierce since Week 2. Mallory, working back from a thumb injury, was also full.
What comes next
Tennessee (0-5) visits Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday, October 18, at 1 p.m. EDT. The Titans opened their week with Tony Pollard and John Franklin-Myers resting and safety Kevin Winston Jr. out. For the Colts, Thursday’s report will show whether Goncalves and Tuimoloau entered the protocol and whether Carlies and Travis can get back on the field. Game designations come Friday.
