Prime Video’s Thursday Night Football package just posted its strongest Week 5 audience on record. Buccaneers-Cowboys on Oct. 8 averaged 16.73 million viewers, including the local over-the-air simulcasts in the home markets, according to Sports Media Watch’s Jon Lewis and figures circulated by Amazon.

That total tops the prior Week 5 Thursday night mark of 16.54 million, set by Vikings-Packers in 2014. It is also up 11 percent from last year’s comparable Week 5 game, 49ers-Rams at 15.02 million. The peak quarter-hour hit 18.56 million at 9 p.m. ET.

Four straight weeks of gains

Lewis’s tracker puts Thursday night at 17.52 million viewers through its first four games of 2026, an 11 percent jump from the 15.78 million pace at the same point last year. The package starts in Week 2, and this is the first time since TNF moved to Prime Video that the series has climbed year over year in each of the opening four weeks.

His numbers also place this season’s four Prime games among the seven most-watched TNF editions on the streamer since 2022, with Buccaneers-Cowboys sixth on that list. It was not the season high on the package: Lions-Bills in Week 2 (18.95 million) and Falcons-Packers in Week 3 (16.83 million) still rank higher.

Why the number matters to the league

Cowboys windows still move the needle for the NFL’s media partners, and a competitive Thursday night that ended with Tampa Bay’s first win and Dallas at 2-3 kept viewers through the finish. The early-season TNF climb sits beside a much larger Sunday number: the Week 4 late window, built around Chiefs-Raiders, drew 28.448 million viewers and remains the season’s most-watched NFL broadcast.

For League news, the takeaway is the business side of the schedule. Thursday night on Prime is running ahead of last year at the one-month mark, Week 5 set a series record for that slot, and the Cowboys’ annual appearance again delivered a mass audience without needing a Sunday afternoon window to do it.

The why matters.
