Andre Szmyt kicked a 32-yard field goal as time expired, and the Cleveland Browns beat the Tennessee Titans 27-24 at Nissan Stadium on Sunday, October 25, after Deshaun Watson moved them 55 yards in four plays in the final 58 seconds.

It was the second straight Sunday that Szmyt ended a game on the last snap, and it lifted Cleveland to 5-2, level with Pittsburgh at the top of the AFC North. Tennessee dropped to 1-6 on a day when Tony Pollard ran for 129 yards and three touchdowns and still finished on the losing side.

How it was decided

Pollard had just tied the game 24-24 with 58 seconds left, finishing an 11-play, 63-yard march with a 1-yard run. Watson needed only three throws to answer. All three were completions, and the big one went to tight end Harold Fannin Jr., who turned a short catch into a 36-yard gain and put the Browns inside Szmyt’s range. The kicker, who had clanged a 43-yard try off the right upright earlier in the fourth quarter, did not miss the second time.

The winning kick was the fifth game-tying or go-ahead field goal of Szmyt’s career inside the final two minutes, which moves him past Dustin Hopkins for the second-most by a Cleveland kicker this century. Only Phil Dawson, with 10, has more.

Every score

  • First quarter, 12:57: Titans, Tony Pollard 36-yard run (Joey Slye kick), 7-0 Tennessee.

  • Second quarter, 0:00: Browns, Szmyt 28-yard field goal, 17-14 Cleveland.
  • Fourth quarter, 8:41: Titans, Slye 29-yard field goal, 17-17.
  • Fourth quarter, 4:34: Browns, Deshaun Watson 9-yard run (Szmyt kick), 24-17 Cleveland.
  • Fourth quarter, 0:58: Titans, Pollard 1-yard run (Slye kick), 24-24.
  • Fourth quarter, 0:00: Browns, Szmyt 32-yard field goal, 27-24 Cleveland.

Turning points

Tennessee scored on its first two possessions, the second set up by an interception of Watson, and had its best start of the season. The game swung near the Cleveland goal line in the second quarter. The Titans had three cracks from the 1 and came away empty when Pollard was stopped on fourth down. Cleveland handed the ball straight back on a Fannin fumble, forced by linebacker Anthony Hill Jr. and scooped up by Tony Adams, yet Denzel Ward picked off Cam Ward on Tennessee’s very next snap.

The Browns cashed that takeaway. Watson found rookie KC Concepcion for gains of 21 and 32 yards on a 78-yard drive that Judkins finished from 6 yards out, and Szmyt’s 28-yarder as the half ended put Cleveland ahead for the first time. Watson’s own 9-yard touchdown run with 4:34 left capped a 71-yard drive and looked like the winner until Pollard’s third score.

The numbers

Watson completed 25 of 36 passes for 308 yards with one interception, his first 300-yard passing game since he joined the Browns. Concepcion set career highs with eight catches for 129 yards and added 23 yards on three carries. Judkins ran 17 times for 96 yards and two touchdowns as Cleveland piled up a season-high 183 rushing yards on 29 carries and 491 total yards to Tennessee’s 322.

For the Titans, Cam Ward went 20 of 31 for 181 yards with an interception, and Carnell Tate caught five passes for 69 yards. Safety Kevin Winston Jr., back after missing two games, led the defense in tackles. Tennessee also lost punter Tommy Townsend to a knee injury late in the first half, which left Slye handling the punting as well. Cleveland right tackle Tytus Howard was evaluated for a concussion after going down early in the third quarter.

“That was a fun one,” Browns head coach Todd Monken said after the game. Concepcion called it his breakout game and said, “I just can’t wait to keep stacking weeks.”

What comes next

The Browns open a three-game road trip at the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, November 1, at 1:00 p.m. EST, with first place in the AFC North on the line. The Titans visit the Cincinnati Bengals the same afternoon at 1:00 p.m. EST. Full box score and drive detail are in the Browns-Titans Game Center.
