Denver Broncos safety Talanoa Hufanga is expected to miss multiple weeks with an ankle injury, Jeremy Fowler reported Wednesday, with one source estimating about two to three weeks depending on how he recovers.
Hufanga left Sunday’s 23-17 win at the Los Angeles Chargers in the third quarter and did not return. He was listed as a non-participant on Denver’s first two estimated injury reports of the short week ahead of Thursday Night Football against the Seattle Seahawks. The injury was not considered severe on the latest check, Fowler’s reporting said, but the timeline still points past this week’s prime-time game and possibly into Week 7 at Arizona.
Secondary already thin for TNF
Cornerback Pat Surtain II (ankle) has also been a non-participant since tweaking the joint against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 4 and missing the Chargers game. Cornerback Riley Moss (ribs) has been limited on the estimated reports after sitting out Week 5. Devon Key filled in for Hufanga in Los Angeles and is the likely next man up alongside Brandon Jones if Hufanga is ruled out again.
What Seattle brings into Denver
Seattle’s midweek estimated reports listed linebackers Chazz Surratt (calf) and Drake Thomas (ankle) as non-participants, with Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Leonard Williams limited by ankle issues. Running back Zach Charbonnet remains on the physically unable to perform list and is unlikely to play Thursday, coach Mike Macdonald said earlier in the week. Receiver Irv Charles was activated from injured reserve and listed as a full participant.
What comes next
Kickoff at Empower Field at Mile High is Thursday, October 15, at 8:15 p.m. EDT on Prime Video. Final practice and game designations from both clubs will set who is available for the short-week matchup.
