Efficiency, not volume

Purdy’s 1,196 passing yards fall outside the top 10. Matthew Stafford leads the league with 1,572. Purdy is doing it on fewer throws instead: 8.4 yards per attempt, a 69.0 completion rate and a 119.3 passer rating, the fourth best among qualified passers.

Cousins and Goff sit one touchdown behind him, and Burrow is two back.

What’s next

The 49ers host the Commanders on Monday night in Week 6. Goff’s Lions and Burrow’s Bengals are on byes, but Cousins and the Raiders host Buffalo on Sunday, so Purdy could enter Monday tied or trailing.

The why matters.
