At 105.4 on 1,495 career attempts, Purdy already sits above Lamar Jackson’s qualified mark of 102.7. Monday night against Washington would lock the record in.

Brock Purdy will own the highest career passer rating in NFL history as soon as he has enough attempts to qualify for the list.

Michael David Smith noted Wednesday that Purdy’s career rating sits at 105.4 on 1,495 regular-season throws. The league’s official leaderboard requires 1,500 career attempts. Lamar Jackson holds the qualified record at 102.7. Five more passes — which Purdy is expected to reach early against the Washington Commanders on Monday Night Football — would put his name alone at the top.

How wide the gap is

The cushion is large enough that the record would survive a nightmare start. Smith noted that even five straight interceptions on Purdy’s next five throws would leave him at about 103.7, still ahead of Jackson’s qualified mark.

Analytics sites framed the same efficiency another way after Purdy’s 50th career start on Sunday: among quarterbacks with at least 50 starts, Purdy’s 105.4 already leads Jackson (102.7), Aaron Rodgers (101.9), Joe Burrow (101.3) and Patrick Mahomes (100.9). The NFL’s published career list uses the 1,500-attempt gate rather than starts, which is why Purdy is not yet credited as the official leader.

What the season has looked like

The 5-0 San Francisco 49ers have ridden that efficiency through five weeks. Purdy has thrown for 1,196 yards with 13 touchdowns and two interceptions, and his season rating of 119.3 sits just behind Jackson’s 119.6 among qualified starters, according to NFL Stats totals compiled through Week 5.

Passer rating has limits as a measure — it weights completion percentage heavily, caps some components and ignores sacks and rushing — but it remains the league’s official career ranking for passers. On that scale, Purdy’s early career is running ahead of every qualified predecessor.

What Monday night means

San Francisco hosts Washington on Monday, October 19, at 8:15 p.m. EDT. The Commanders are 1-3-1. Purdy needs only five attempts to clear the qualifier; barring an extraordinary inactive decision, the record should change hands in the first quarter.

The career list will still move with every start after that. For one night, the story is simpler: five throws from the top of the book.

The why matters.
