Chicago's right guard did not return in Atlanta, and with the Patriots due at Soldier Field in four days, a backup may have to start on a short week.

Chicago Bears right guard Jonah Jackson hurt his left hip in Sunday’s 31-23 win at Atlanta and did not return, leaving the Bears with three days to decide who lines up beside the center when the New England Patriots visit Soldier Field on Thursday night.

Jackson went down in the third quarter at Mercedes-Benz Stadium and was listed as doubtful to return. After the game, Ben Johnson confirmed the injury was to the left hip but offered nothing on its severity or on Jackson’s chances of playing in Week 7.

Luke Newman’s turn

Luke Newman took over at right guard and had his first real snaps of the season. He held up on a seven-play, 52-yard march that Roschon Johnson finished with a touchdown run, and his ability to play every interior spot makes him the obvious candidate if Jackson cannot go. Rookie center Logan Jones, a second-round pick from Iowa, has been used mainly on special teams and is an unlikely option this early.

Losing Jackson would hurt. He has been one of the steadier pieces on a line that allowed four sacks of Caleb Williams in Atlanta, in a game where Williams returned from a three-week absence with a hamstring injury and completed his first 12 throws.

A short week for both lines

The quick turnaround cuts both ways. New England left its 26-19 win over the New York Jets with three starting offensive linemen hurt: left guard Alijah Vera-Tucker, right guard Ben Brown and right tackle Morgan Moses. Johnson already managed Sunday’s fourth quarter with Thursday in mind, resting defensive starters once the lead reached 24, and he said the night game shaped those choices.

Because Thursday kickoffs leave no time for full practices, both clubs will file estimated participation reports on Monday and Tuesday before the final designations on Wednesday. Jackson’s line on Monday’s report will be the first real sign of whether Newman starts.

What comes next

The Patriots visit the Bears on Thursday, October 22, at 8:15 p.m. EDT (Game Center). Follow every designation for both teams on the WhyNFL injury page.
