The September 17 result
Buffalo beat Detroit 41–31 on Thursday, September 17, in the first regular-season Bills home game at the new Highmark Stadium. Josh Allen contributed three passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns.
The quarterback’s line
Allen completed 20 of 31 passes for 248 yards and added 69 rushing yards. Buffalo’s offense repeatedly extended drives, converting nine of its twelve third-down opportunities.
How the five touchdowns shaped the game
Allen scored the stadium’s first regular-season touchdown on a one-yard run to complete a 10-play, 85-yard opening possession. His passing touchdowns went to three different targets: Josh Palmer from 43 yards, Dawson Knox from one yard and Dalton Kincaid from 16 yards.
The other rushing touchdown came after Detroit cut Buffalo’s lead to 27–17 in the third quarter. Allen finished a 15-play response that used more than eight minutes with a two-yard run. That possession extended Buffalo’s lead and took time away from Detroit’s comeback attempt.
The football takeaway
The dual-threat workload matters here: Allen’s rushing contribution was part of the scoring picture, not an incidental addition to a passing performance. The result is final; it is not a live score.
For the team-level picture, our Bills–Lions analysis of rushing, sack losses and late possessions explains why the passing-yard comparison alone misses how Buffalo built its advantage.
