The New York Jets go into Sunday’s AFC East game against the winless Miami Dolphins without three regulars and with Breece Hall’s status still open. Linebacker Francisco Mauigoa, edge rusher Joseph Ossai and offensive lineman Max Mitchell are out, while Hall, guard Dylan Parham and running back Kene Nwangwu carry questionable tags into the 1 p.m. EDT kickoff at MetLife Stadium.

At 2-4 and a game removed from a 26-19 loss at New England, the Jets cannot afford a slip against a Miami side that has yet to win. The good news on offense is receiver Adonai Mitchell, who is back after a four-game absence with a finger injury.

Hall a game-time call

Hall has been dealing with a quadriceps injury since late September. He sat out Wednesday’s practice, then was limited on Thursday and again on Friday, and Aaron Glenn listed him as questionable. If he cannot go, Braelon Allen, who carried 17 times for 78 yards against the Patriots, would again lead the backfield. Nwangwu missed two practices with a knee problem before working fully on Friday, so he is questionable as well, and Parham was limited all week with a knee issue.

Teams name their inactive players 90 minutes before kickoff, which puts the answer on Hall at about 11:30 a.m. EDT.

Three ruled out

Mauigoa (quadriceps) and Ossai (ankle) did not practice on any of the three days, and Max Mitchell is out with a concussion. Two of the three absences come in the front seven, so the defense will lean harder on its healthy pass rushers. Edge rusher Will McDonald IV (toe), Adonai Mitchell (finger) and defensive lineman T’Vondre Sweat (elbow) were all limited early in the week but finished with full practices on Friday and have no designation.

Adonai Mitchell’s return gives Geno Smith a fuller set of targets alongside Garrett Wilson and rookie Omar Cooper Jr., who caught six passes for 103 yards in his first game back from injured reserve. Mitchell, Cooper, Hall and tight end Mason Taylor had missed 13 games between them over the first six weeks.

Miami’s list

The Dolphins ruled out defensive back Reese Taylor (quadriceps), who did not practice all week. Defensive end Rob Beal Jr. (hamstring) is doubtful after three limited sessions, and linebacker Willie Gay Jr. is questionable after an illness kept him out on Thursday. Quarterback Malik Willis, who was listed with a right thumb issue, practiced fully every day and has no designation, as do running back Jaylen Wright (foot) and receiver Caleb Douglas (ankle).

What comes next

The Jets host the Dolphins on Sunday, October 25, at 1:00 p.m. EDT; follow it in the Dolphins-Jets Game Center. They stay at home to face the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, November 1, at 1:00 p.m. EST, while Miami hosts the New England Patriots that day at 4:25 p.m. EST. Every club’s latest designations are on the injury report.

The why matters.
