The NFC East's lost October: two weeks without a win, a 3-2-1 leader and a 2-4 vs. 2-4 Monday night

No division since the 1970 merger had gone two straight weeks without a win while all four teams played. Scroll through how Dallas, Philadelphia, New York and Washington got here, and why Cowboys-Eagles still matters.

Chapter 1

Two weeks, zero wins

It began on a Thursday night in Arlington and ended on a Monday night in Santa Clara. Over Weeks 5 and 6, the four NFC East teams played eight games between them, counting the one they played against each other, and won none.

When Washington lost 23-17 at the unbeaten 49ers on Oct. 19, the NFC East became the first division since the AFL-NFL merger to go winless in back-to-back weeks with all four teams in action.

Chapter 2

First place at 3-2-1

After six weeks, no team in the division has a winning record against the rest of the league. Against everyone outside the NFC East, the four teams are a combined 5-11.

The Giants lead under John Harbaugh despite losing quarterback Jaxson Dart and edge rusher Brian Burns to season-ending knee injuries.

All four have been outscored. The bars above show how far: from minus-4 for New York to minus-40 for Washington.

Harbaugh has switched quarterbacks, too. J.J. McCarthy, acquired from Minnesota on Sept. 28, starts Sunday at Houston in place of Jameis Winston.

“We can win the division, we can win more than the division.”

Chapter 3

Dallas: 30.5 points, then 14.5

The Cowboys scored at least 31 points in three of their first four games and went 2-2. Then the offense stalled: 16 points against Tampa Bay and 13 at Green Bay, where Dak Prescott threw 54 passes and Javonte Williams ran 11 times.

Chapter 4

Philadelphia: four straight

The Eagles won the division in each of the past two seasons, going 11-6 in 2025. This year they started 2-0, then lost four in a row for the first time since 2020.

Wk 4: Rams, 24-204
Wk 5: Jaguars (London), 19-172
Wk 6: Panthers, 25-1411

The losses came with a run of bad news. Right tackle Lane Johnson retired on Oct. 6, center Cam Jurgens was traded to Baltimore, and A.J. Brown had been dealt in the offseason.

Jalen Hurts was cleated in the calf against the Rams. A superficial clot was found the night before the London game and he played. Later tests showed deep vein thrombosis and clots in both lungs. He is on blood thinners, is expected to recover fully and is expected to miss the rest of the season.

Chapter 5

Washington: one win, one tie

Dan Quinn’s Commanders have allowed 172 points, the most in the division, and their only win came 33-31 over Seattle in Week 3. They had chances late in Santa Clara before losing 23-17 to a 49ers team that was 6-0.

  1. Lost 24-22 at Philadelphia.
  2. Lost 37-20 at Dallas.
  3. Beat Seattle 33-31.
  4. Lost 30-13 to Indianapolis.
  5. Tied the Giants 27-27 in overtime.
  6. Lost 23-17 at San Francisco.

Washington has its bye in Week 7. Next, it hosts Philadelphia on Sunday night, Nov. 1, six days after the Eagles play Dallas.

Chapter 6

How low can a champion go?

This is the only division in which all four teams have won a Super Bowl, 14 titles between them. It has also crowned a losing champion before: Washington won it at 7-9 in 2020.

In a full season, a division winner has finished below .500 five times, all since 2010.

2014 Panthers, 7-8-17 wins
2020 Washington, 7-97 wins
2022 Buccaneers, 8-98 wins

Chapter 7

Monday night in Philadelphia

Cowboys-Eagles kicks off at 8:15 p.m. ET on Monday, Oct. 26, which is 3:15 a.m. Tuesday in Cairo. It is the third straight prime-time game for Dallas, which lost the first two. The teams split last season: Philadelphia won 24-20 in the opener and Dallas won 24-21 in November.

“There's nothing better than hearing them quiet and getting them to boo their team.”
— Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, on playing in Philadelphia
0straight prime-time games for Dallas
0straight losses for Philadelphia
0games left for each team after Monday
0team that leaves Monday at 3-4

Monday’s winner moves to 3-4: half a game behind the Giants if New York loses in Houston on Sunday, a game and a half behind if it wins. The loser falls to 2-5, still in a division nobody has taken.

After that comes a run of division games: Philadelphia at Washington on Nov. 1, then Giants at Philadelphia on Nov. 8, and Cowboys-Eagles again on Thanksgiving.

The why matters.
