Kansas City's right tackle faces a race to clear the protocol before Sunday night in Seattle, while Andy Reid expects Kelce, Jalen Royals and Kingsley Suamataia to be fine.

Kansas City Chiefs right tackle Jaylon Moore is in the concussion protocol after leaving Sunday’s 22-6 win over the Los Angeles Chargers, Andy Reid said, and he now faces a race to be cleared before a Sunday night trip to Seattle.

Moore was the only Chief ruled out at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. He went into the protocol late in the second quarter, and the club later ruled him out for the rest of the game. Joshua Ezeudu, who arrived in a training-camp trade with the New York Giants, played right tackle the rest of the way. “As far as the injuries go, Jaylon Moore has a concussion,” Reid said after the game.

The timing is awkward for the line. Kansas City was already playing without left tackle Josh Simmons, who has been working back from a back injury and was limited in practice last week. If Simmons is ready for Week 7, the Chiefs could have one starting tackle back just as they lose another. If neither is available, Ezeudu is the likely answer again.

Kelce taped up and kept playing

The other names on Reid’s list sounded less serious. Travis Kelce turned his right ankle early in the game, had it taped on the sideline, left once more to have the wrap redone and still finished the game with four catches for 53 yards. Reid said the 37-year-old tight end would be sore on Monday but should be fine. Kelce’s season line now reads 16 catches, 246 yards and two scores, so the Chiefs may simply lighten his practice load this week.

Receiver Jalen Royals was taken to the medical tent for a concussion check and cleared by the independent neurologist to return; the team will watch him for symptoms during the week. In the closing minutes, a boot to the calf forced left guard Kingsley Suamataia off for a few plays, with Mike Caliendo filling in. “He should be OK,” Reid said of Suamataia. Cornerback Nohl Williams appeared to hurt a shoulder early but returned the next series and was not part of Reid’s update.

What it means for Kansas City

The win kept the Chiefs unbeaten at 5-0, and they did it without receiver Rashee Rice, who was inactive with hamstring and knee injuries. Cornerback Christian Roland-Wallace was thrown out in the final quarter for what looked like a punch at an opponent, which could draw a look from the league office. The Chargers, now 0-6, lost receiver Ladd McConkey and defensive back Deane Leonard to concussions in the same game.

Moore must clear all five steps of the protocol, including sign-off from an independent neurologist, before he can play. The first practice report of the week, due Wednesday, will show whether he is able to take part.

What comes next

The Chiefs visit the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, October 25, at 8:20 p.m. EDT. Every designation for both clubs will appear on the WhyNFL injury page as the week’s reports come out, and the full result is in the Game Center.

The why matters.
