New York lost a second cornerback to a concussion and finished with backups at both tackle spots, a week before its last game ahead of the bye.

The New York Giants came out of Sunday’s 34-27 loss to the New Orleans Saints with three more starters to worry about: cornerback Greg Newsome II was ruled out with a concussion, Darnell Mooney exited with a neck problem, and left tackle Andrew Thomas watched the final minutes after a concussion check.

The timing is awkward for a 3-2-1 team that already had a crowded injury list and has one more game, at Houston, before its bye week.

Newsome and a thinning secondary

Newsome went down in the third quarter and did not come back. It is the worst possible spot for New York to lose him. Cornerback Colton Hood was already inactive with his own concussion and safety Tyler Nubin was out with a neck problem, so the Giants finished the game with slot defender Nic Jones moved outside, according to Dan Duggan.

Newsome, who signed a one-year, $8 million deal in March, had been listed as limited all week with a groin issue and still started. A concussion puts him in the league protocol, and he will need to clear each stage before he can face the Texans.

Mooney and Thomas

Mooney also left in the third quarter. The Giants listed the receiver as questionable to return. He had appeared on the practice report with a neck issue during the week but carried no game designation into Sunday.

Thomas played through the groin injury that had made him questionable, but with roughly seven minutes remaining he was slow to get up and was sent for a concussion evaluation. He passed it. Thomas said the staff chose to keep him out anyway, and rookie J.C. Davis finished the game at left tackle. With right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor scratched before kickoff because of a calf injury and Marcus Mbow starting in his place, New York ended the afternoon with backups at both tackle spots.

Tight end Theo Johnson (neck) was the other starter missing for the day. Safety Jason Pinnock returned from his Week 4 concussion to start, and edge rusher Abdul Carter played through his calf injury.

The Saints’ side

New Orleans had its own exits. Right guard Cesar Ruiz hurt his knee late in the first half, and cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry left in the second half; Kellen Moore described it as a migraine. Quarterback Tyler Shough again played with broken bones in his left, non-throwing hand.

What comes next

The first official word on all three Giants will come with Wednesday’s practice report. The Giants visit the Houston Texans on Sunday, October 25, at 1 p.m. EDT, while the Saints head to Paris to face the Pittsburgh Steelers. The latest designations are on our injury page, and the full game is in the Saints-Giants recap.
