Walker has the best per-game mark of anyone in the top 15 at 155.2 scrimmage yards, because the Chiefs were on their bye in Week 5. Gibbs averages 149.4 and Robinson 146.4. Seattle’s Jaxon Smith-Njigba is the top non-running back at 599 yards, with 583 of them as the league’s leading receiver. New Orleans’ Chris Olave (537) is ninth with every one of his yards coming on catches.

Gibbs has also moved the chains more than anyone: 47 of his 132 touches have gone for first downs, 14 more than any other running back or receiver. He has nine touchdowns, seven rushing and two receiving, and the 207 scrimmage yards he put up at Arizona on Sunday were his best game of the season.

The lead could change hands this weekend. Detroit is on its bye in Week 6, so Gibbs stays at 747. Robinson needs 16 yards against Chicago in Atlanta on Sunday (1 p.m. ET, 8 p.m. Cairo) to pass him. Warren’s Steelers play at Tampa Bay at the same time, and Walker’s Chiefs host the Chargers at 4:25 p.m. ET (11:25 p.m. Cairo).

Scrimmage yards are rushing yards plus receiving yards. Touches are rushing attempts plus receptions. The totals cover every regular-season game through Monday night of Week 5 and do not include Thursday night’s Seahawks-Broncos game.

The why matters.
