The Jets coach said the third-year receiver is moving his fingers well after waiting more than a week to schedule the repair, but he has not played since Week 2.

New York Jets wide receiver Adonai Mitchell underwent a small procedure on his injured finger and remains week to week, head coach Aaron Glenn told reporters Wednesday as the club opened preparation for Sunday’s game at the New England Patriots.

“He did have a small procedure on his hand, but the good thing is man he’s moving his fingers around really, really well,” Glenn said.

Out since Week 2

Mitchell has not played since the Jets’ overtime loss to the Green Bay Packers in Week 2. He hurt the finger in practice before Week 3 against Detroit and has missed three straight games. Glenn said the club waited roughly a week to a week and a half to see how the finger progressed before going ahead with the procedure.

“He waited like a week, week and a half before he had to see how he actually was going to progress and then we wanted to go ahead and get it knocked out,” Glenn said.

What New York has lost

In two games before the injury, Mitchell caught 9 of 15 targets for 123 yards, a 13.7-yard average. He also drew a 34-yard pass interference penalty on Green Bay’s Keisean Nixon that set up a short Braelon Allen touchdown run. Without him, New York has leaned on Garrett Wilson, Isaiah Williams and Tim Patrick in three-receiver groupings.

Mitchell was listed as a non-participant on Wednesday’s estimated injury report for the Jets’ walkthrough, alongside running back Breece Hall (quad) and left guard Dylan Parham (knee). Hall and Parham are also week to week. Rookie tight end Kenyon Sadiq remains in the concussion protocol as a limited participant.

Help arriving around him

The same day Glenn detailed Mitchell’s procedure, the Jets opened the 21-day practice window for rookie wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr., who returned as a limited participant after an ankle injury from Week 1. Linebacker Kiko Mauigoa was a full participant after missing three games with a quad injury.

“Good to see some of our guys that were injured actually getting ready to come back,” Glenn said, “and then to see how some of our guys are actually progressing well.”

What comes next

The Jets visit the Patriots on Sunday, October 18, at 1:00 p.m. EDT. Mitchell is unlikely to clear for a fourth straight absence until the finger continues to respond, and Thursday and Friday reports will show whether Hall or Parham change status before kickoff.

The why matters.
