Game story

Kyle Monangai runs for 146 yards as Chicago beats the Jets

Kyle Monangai carried 30 times for 146 yards and two touchdowns, and the Chicago Bears beat the New York Jets 23–12 at Soldier Field.

Monangai scored from a yard out late in the first quarter and from 5 yards late in the third, and Cairo Santos kicked three field goals. Chicago controlled the game on the ground and through the air, out-gaining the Jets 492 yards to 157.

Tyson Bagent completed 25 of 34 passes for 268 yards for the Bears, with Rome Odunze catching six for 94, though Minkah Fitzpatrick intercepted him once. The Jets managed only eight completions. Geno Smith's touchdown, a 58-yard pass to Isaiah Williams with 9:16 left, came after Chicago already led 23–6.

Smith finished 8 of 15 for 119 yards and was sacked three times. Chicago (3–1) visits Green Bay next. The Jets (1–3) host Cleveland.

Preview: Jets at Bears, October 4

Updated October 3, 2026, Eastern time. The New York Jets visit the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field on Sunday, October 4. Kickoff is noon CDT / 1 p.m. EDT. New York enters 1–2 and Chicago 2–1. This is an upcoming-game preview, not a recap.

Who will start at quarterback for Chicago?

Caleb Williams is out with a hamstring injury for a second consecutive game. Ben Johnson had not named his replacement as of Friday’s update: the choice remained Tyson Bagent or Case Keenum.

Ian Rapoport reported Friday evening that Bagent was expected to start after receiving first-team practice reps during the week. The Bears had not named a starter in their latest official update, published Friday afternoon, when Johnson declined to choose publicly between Bagent and Keenum. Bagent is the reported likely starter; team confirmation remained pending when this preview was checked Saturday morning.

Keenum passed for 247 yards and accounted for three touchdowns in Monday’s 27–7 win over Philadelphia. Bagent has cleared concussion protocol, having been cleared the day before that game. Neither Keenum’s performance nor Bagent’s medical clearance is an announcement of Sunday’s starter. The unresolved selection is an important distinction for anyone checking this preview before the game-day lineup is released.

How do the Jets replace Breece Hall?

Breece Hall is out with a quadriceps injury. Braelon Allen took most of the practice repetitions described in the Jets’ Friday morning update, and Allen and Isaiah Davis are the backs positioned for more work. Their exact division of carries has not been announced.

The change goes beyond the running back. Guard Dylan Parham is also out, as are receiver Adonai Mitchell, tight end Mason Taylor and linebacker Kiko Mauigoa. That leaves New York adjusting both who carries the ball and parts of the group around him.

What else did Friday’s injury report establish?

Gordon, Sewell and Turner are listed out even though Friday’s table shows full practice participation. Use the game-status column when checking this matchup; a full practice does not by itself establish eligibility or activation.

A matchup beyond the quarterback question

Geno Smith completed 77 of 102 passes in the first three games, a 75.5% completion rate, without an interception. Against Detroit, Garrett Wilson and Sadiq each topped 100 receiving yards and scored a touchdown. Sadiq’s questionable designation means that combination cannot simply be assumed available again.

Preview analysis: New York’s run-game adjustments and Chicago’s quarterback decision make the supporting personnel unusually important. Watch whether Allen and Davis can keep the Jets’ offense balanced with Hall and Parham unavailable, and how Chicago divides responsibility around whichever quarterback starts. The Bears’ success against Philadelphia is useful context, but it does not establish Sunday’s quarterback or guarantee another result.
