Patriots win Super Bowl XXXVIII, 32–29 over the Carolina Panthers

The New England Patriots beat the Carolina Panthers 32–29 at Reliant Stadium, a neutral site, in Super Bowl XXXVIII on February 1, 2004. It was decided by 3 points, a field goal or less.

The Panthers went 11–5 in the regular season and the Patriots went 14–2. The Patriots had already beaten the Tennessee Titans in the Divisional round and the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC Championship Game. Counting from the 1999 season, it was the franchise’s second Super Bowl title. The loss ended the Panthers’ season.

In their previous meeting, the New England Patriots won 38–6 on January 6, 2002. When they met again, the Carolina Panthers won 27–17 on September 18, 2005.
