Andre Szmyt's 56-yard field goal beats Pittsburgh with 10 seconds left

Andre Szmyt kicked a 56-yard field goal with 10 seconds left, and the Cleveland Browns beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 27–24 on Thursday night in Cleveland.

Cleveland scored three touchdowns in the second quarter, on runs by Jaleel McLaughlin (28 yards) and Quinshon Judkins (2 yards) and Deshaun Watson's 2-yard pass to Harold Fannin Jr., for a 21–10 halftime lead.

Pittsburgh rallied in the fourth quarter. Aaron Rodgers threw a 21-yard touchdown to Darnell Washington, and after a Szmyt field goal he found Pat Freiermuth from 3 yards with 1:42 left, then ran in the two-point conversion himself to tie the game at 24. Cleveland moved just far enough for Szmyt's winner.

Rodgers threw for 299 yards and three touchdowns but was sacked five times and intercepted twice. DK Metcalf caught five passes for 115 yards. Watson completed 24 of 33 passes for 268 yards. Cleveland (3–1) visits the Jets next; Pittsburgh (2–2) hosts Indianapolis.

Week 4 recap: Cleveland protects its margin, then wins it back

The Cleveland Browns beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 27–24 at Huntington Bank Field on October 1, 2026. Andre Szmyt’s 56-yard field goal with 10 seconds remaining settled a game shaped by Cleveland’s second-quarter scoring burst and defensive stops that kept Pittsburgh from narrowing the gap earlier.

The possessions that built the lead

Pittsburgh’s opening touchdown drive lasted 17 plays and 9:48, ending with Aaron Rodgers’ 12-yard pass to Roman Wilson. Cleveland’s response came after Denzel Ward intercepted Rodgers early in the second quarter. Four plays later, Jaleel McLaughlin’s 28-yard touchdown run tied the game.

A Steelers three-and-out gave Cleveland another possession, and Denzel Boston’s 60-yard reception put the Browns in position for Quinshon Judkins’ two-yard touchdown. Deshaun Watson later finished an 11-play drive with a two-yard scoring pass to Harold Fannin Jr. Cleveland had turned a 7–0 deficit into a 21–7 lead before Chris Boswell’s field goal made it 21–10 at halftime.

Why the sacks mattered

Cleveland recorded five sacks, with two especially costly for Pittsburgh’s scoring chances. Isaiah McGuire’s six-yard sack on third down preceded Boswell’s missed 48-yard field goal in the second quarter. After T.J. Watt recovered a Watson fumble at midfield in the third, Pittsburgh reached Cleveland’s 30 before a false start and Mike Hall Jr.’s 10-yard sack pushed the Steelers back into a punt.

Both teams lost the ball twice, but those turnovers had different consequences. Cleveland converted Ward’s interception into a touchdown; Pittsburgh came away empty after the fumble recovery. The Steelers did cash in Robert Spears-Jennings’ fourth-quarter interception, with a 43-yard DK Metcalf catch helping set up Darnell Washington’s 21-yard touchdown.

A tie still left Cleveland time

Szmyt’s 44-yard field goal restored an eight-point cushion. Rodgers then found Pat Freiermuth for a three-yard touchdown and ran in the two-point conversion, tying the score with 1:42 left. Cleveland answered with a seven-play, 36-net-yard drive for the winning kick. Grant Delpit intercepted Pittsburgh’s next pass, leaving the Browns 3–1 and the Steelers 2–2.
