Watt’s interception return gives Steelers the decisive touchdown

T.J. Watt supplied the separation in a tight opener, returning an interception 35 yards for the touchdown that helped the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Atlanta Falcons 20–13 at Acrisure Stadium on September 13, 2026. Mike McCarthy’s first regular-season game as Pittsburgh’s head coach ended with a win built around defensive stops.

Atlanta was within 13–10 early in the fourth quarter when Watt intercepted Cooper Rush’s pass. He fell during the return, got back up and completed the score, stretching the lead to 10. Watt and Alex Highsmith each recorded two sacks. Highsmith’s second, on Atlanta’s final third-down play, pushed the Falcons out to the Pittsburgh 43 and forced a punt with the score still 20–13.

Both offenses needed help from takeaways

The Falcons’ only touchdown came after Jaylen Warren lost a fumble in Pittsburgh territory. Rush found Bijan Robinson for a 23-yard score and a 7–3 lead. The Steelers answered with a field goal, then Jaquan Brisker’s interception gave Aaron Rodgers the ball at Atlanta’s 31. Four plays later, Rodgers found Pat Freiermuth for a six-yard touchdown to put Pittsburgh ahead 13–7. That remained the halftime score.

Robinson kept Atlanta competitive with 83 rushing yards and eight catches for 90 yards, accounting for 173 yards from scrimmage. But Rush finished with 143 passing yards and two interceptions, while Drake London caught only two passes for 29 yards and Kyle Pitts had no receptions. The Falcons repeatedly reached third down without finding the play needed to sustain a drive.

Washington and Warren finish the job

Rodgers’ 221 passing yards and touchdown were enough, though Pittsburgh converted only three of 13 third downs. One of those conversions mattered at the end: Darnell Washington gained 15 yards on third-and-three during the final possession. After a Rico Dowdle run exhausted Atlanta’s last timeout, Warren added nine yards and another first down before the two-minute warning. Pittsburgh could kneel out the remaining time.

The Steelers finished with only 58 rushing yards, so this was hardly a complete offensive performance. Their defense made the bigger plays, and the offense protected the lead when the game needed to be closed. Pittsburgh opened 1–0 and Atlanta 0–1.
