First downs & scoring opportunities

UPDATED Updated Oct 4, 2026, 10:47 am EDT

StatisticDALNYG
First downs (play record)2028
Third-down conversions8 / 11 (72.7%)9 / 11 (81.8%)
Fourth-down conversions0 / 0 (no attempts)0 / 0 (no attempts)
Touchdowns / inside-20 drives3 / 3 (100.0%)4 / 4 (100.0%)

Conversions count recorded successful and failed attempts; punts, field goals and nullified downs do not become attempts just because they occur on fourth or third down. First downs count the play record's total, including recorded penalty awards; these can differ from drive-summary counts. An incomplete play record withholds the affected count. Zero opportunities have no percentage.

Inside-20 counts drives where a recorded down starts closer than 20 yards from the opponent's goal line. Reaching only the 20-yard line is excluded. The numerator counts those drives ending in a touchdown for the possessing team, excluding opponent return touchdowns. This is not a count of every touchdown or an official league red-zone ranking.

Drive clocks account for the full game. Play counts use the recorded drive totals; they can differ from the number of events in play-by-play. Return touchdowns are identified separately from the possessing team's drive result.

Game recap

Postgame analysis: Dart and Likely keep Dallas off the field

The New York Giants opened John Harbaugh’s tenure with a 28–20 victory over the Dallas Cowboys at MetLife Stadium on September 13, 2026. Jaxson Dart threw three touchdown passes, Isaiah Likely caught two of them, and New York ran out the clock after Dallas scored its final touchdown with 5:21 remaining.

A takeaway changes the end of the first half

Dallas had tied the game at 7–7 on Dak Prescott’s one-yard pass to CeeDee Lamb and then recovered a Tyrone Tracy Jr. fumble. The Cowboys could not turn that opportunity into a halftime lead. Jevon Holland intercepted Prescott, returning possession to the Giants at their own 45 with 49 seconds left.

Dart moved New York 55 yards in 29 seconds, finding Malik Nabers for 16 yards on third-and-nine and Darnell Mooney for another 18 before a 15-yard touchdown pass to Likely. The Giants led 14–7 at halftime and opened the third quarter with an eight-minute touchdown drive, again ending with Likely, this time from two yards.

Long possessions leave no final Dallas response

Javonte Williams’ one-yard run brought Dallas back within a touchdown. New York answered with another extended drive: 13 plays, 65 yards and 8:11, capped by Dart’s nine-yard pass to Devin Singletary. Williams then caught a 17-yard touchdown from Prescott, but Brandon Aubrey missed the extra point, leaving the score 28–20.

The Giants closed by moving the chains instead of defending another Dallas drive. Likely made catches of 12 and five yards on third down, and Cam Skattebo’s eight-yard run supplied the final first down before the kneeldowns. New York finished with 36:40 of possession and converted nine of 11 third downs, with the last unsuccessful attempt coming on the final kneel.

Dart completed 23 of 29 passes for 230 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions, adding 54 rushing yards. Likely caught all eight of his targets for 78 yards; Skattebo ran for 81 yards and the opening touchdown. Prescott threw for 175 yards and two scores, but Dallas was outgained 394–244. The Giants’ division win combined efficient passing with an offense that repeatedly kept the next possession out of reach.
