Patriots win Super Bowl LI, 34–28 over the Atlanta Falcons

The New England Patriots beat the Atlanta Falcons 34–28 at NRG Stadium, a neutral site, in overtime in Super Bowl LI on February 5, 2017. It was a one-score game at the finish, decided by 6 points.

It was the only game of the 2016 playoffs to need overtime.

The Patriots went 14–2 in the regular season and the Falcons went 11–5. The Patriots had already beaten the Houston Texans in the Divisional round and the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship Game. Counting from the 1999 season, it was the franchise’s fifth Super Bowl title. The loss ended the Falcons’ season.

In their previous meeting, the New England Patriots won 30–23 on September 29, 2013. When they met again, the New England Patriots won 23–7 on October 22, 2017.
