Why Cincinnati’s stops outweighed Houston’s yardage

The Cincinnati Bengals beat the Houston Texans 20–6 on September 20, 2026, by separating moving the ball from finishing a possession. Houston gained more net yards, but Cincinnati scored the game’s only two touchdowns and kept every Texans fourth-down attempt from becoming a first down.

A red-zone stop became the opening touchdown

With the game still scoreless in the second quarter, Dexter Lawrence stopped David Montgomery for a one-yard loss on fourth-and-one at the Cincinnati 18. The Bengals then traveled 81 yards in seven plays. Tee Higgins kept that possession alive with catches of 18 yards on third-and-eight and 23 on third-and-four, before Joe Burrow found Ja’Marr Chase for a 32-yard touchdown. The sequence turned Houston’s chance to strike first into a 7–0 deficit.

Houston reached halftime trailing only 7–3. Evan McPherson’s 51-yard field goal extended the margin after the break, and a missed Texans field goal gave Cincinnati the ball near midfield. Burrow’s 18-yard touchdown pass to Chase finished the ensuing possession. McPherson later connected from 57 yards, making the score 20–6 early in the fourth quarter.

The difference was at the end of drives

Burrow finished with 207 passing yards and two touchdowns; Chase caught seven passes for 75 yards, while Higgins added five for 95. Houston had substantial production through Dalton Schultz, whose 12 receptions produced 140 yards. But C.J. Stroud’s 353 passing yards did not yield a touchdown, and the Texans finished 0-for-4 on fourth down. Those empty possessions explain why the yardage advantage never became scoreboard pressure.

Cedric Johnson supplied two fourth-quarter sacks as Cincinnati protected the lead. The Bengals left Houston at 2–0, while the Texans fell to 0–2. At the end of Week 2, Cincinnati had evidence that its defense could support a win without a high-scoring offensive performance; Houston’s immediate problem was converting sustained movement into points.
