How Cleveland turned two late drives into a comeback

The Cleveland Browns recovered from a ten-point deficit to beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 23–19 at Raymond James Stadium on September 20, 2026. Deshaun Watson’s second-half touchdown passes changed a game initially controlled by field goals, and the defense protected the final lead across a lengthy interruption for lightning.

Boston supplied the explosive answer

Tampa Bay led 9–6 at halftime and opened the third quarter with a 65-yard touchdown drive, capped by Baker Mayfield’s five-yard pass to Emeka Egbuka. Cleveland first reduced the deficit with an Andre Szmyt field goal. Denzel Boston then turned a catch over the middle into a 55-yard touchdown, escaping tackles to bring the Browns level at 16–16 late in the quarter.

Another Buccaneers field goal put Cleveland behind again. The answer was a different kind of possession: 12 plays covering 68 yards and consuming 6:07. Watson converted third downs with a scramble and passes to Boston and Harold Fannin Jr. His 17-yard scoring pass to Blake Whiteheart on third-and-two gave the Browns a 23–19 lead with 3:51 remaining. The explosive play had erased the earlier gap; the sustained drive supplied the winner.

The final stand survived the delay

Tampa Bay’s last possession was interrupted at the two-minute warning by a weather delay lasting two hours and 11 minutes. After play resumed, the Buccaneers reached Cleveland’s 13 before an offensive-holding penalty pushed them back. Mekhi Blackmon broke up a pass, Carson Schwesinger contained a Mayfield scramble, and the fourth-and-11 throw toward Egbuka fell incomplete.

Watson completed 24 of 30 passes for 238 yards without an interception, while Boston finished with five catches for 95 yards. Cleveland managed only 44 rushing yards, so the passing efficiency and late third-down conversions were essential. The result left the Browns 1–1 and Tampa Bay 0–2 after Week 2: a recovery for Cleveland, and a lost opportunity for a Buccaneers team that had led by ten in the third quarter.
