Game story

Buffalo stays perfect despite five turnovers

The Buffalo Bills turned the ball over five times and still beat the Los Angeles Chargers 24–16 in Orchard Park, rallying in the fourth quarter to move to 3–0.

The Chargers led 10–0 after Justin Herbert's 1-yard touchdown pass to Keaton Mitchell and a Cameron Dicker field goal, and they led 13–10 after Dicker's second kick in the third quarter. Josh Allen tied the game in the final seconds of the first half with a 1-yard run and put Buffalo ahead with another 1-yard run with 7:35 left. James Cook III's 3-yard run made it 24–13.

Cook carried 24 times for 154 yards. Allen completed 16 of 26 passes for 204 yards but was intercepted twice by Genesis Smith and sacked four times. Buffalo's defense sacked Herbert twice, both by Greg Rousseau, and C.J. Gardner-Johnson intercepted him once.

Herbert finished 20 of 34 for 226 yards. The Chargers fell to 0–3 and visit Seattle next. Buffalo hosts New England.

Why five Buffalo turnovers did not decide the result

Week 3 recap: September 27, 2026. The Buffalo Bills beat the Los Angeles Chargers 24–16 at Highmark Stadium despite giving the ball away five times. Buffalo’s defense kept those mistakes survivable, and its running game eventually turned a fourth-quarter deficit into a lead.

The interception that stopped Los Angeles pulling away

With the Chargers leading 13–10, Khalil Mack’s strip sack gave Los Angeles possession at Buffalo’s 28. The next opportunity ended with C.J. Gardner-Johnson intercepting Justin Herbert near the goal line and returning the ball 41 yards. Rather than fall further behind, Buffalo began the possession that produced its first lead.

Josh Allen’s one-yard touchdown run put the Bills ahead 17–13 with 7:35 remaining. After another defensive stop, James Cook III finished the next scoring drive with a three-yard touchdown run. Buffalo had finally turned repeated defensive resistance into a two-score cushion.

The Chargers created chances but failed to finish them

Genesis Smith intercepted Allen twice, and Los Angeles recovered three Buffalo fumbles. Yet only the first two takeaways led to points. The final three produced none, leaving the Chargers without the separation their defense had earned.

One third-quarter possession reached second-and-goal at the one before false starts helped force a field goal. Los Angeles scored one touchdown on four red-zone trips. Its own defensive holding penalty also extended the drive that ended in Allen’s go-ahead score. The problem was converting advantageous situations into completed stops and touchdowns.

Cook supplied the steady production

Cook ran 24 times for 154 yards and a touchdown, recovering from his opening-play fumble to gain 95 rushing yards after halftime. Eight of his carries produced first downs. Allen added two rushing touchdowns, while Ty Johnson supplied four catches for 50 yards. Greg Rousseau finished with two sacks.

The teams were almost level in total offense, Buffalo leading 350–348. Herbert passed for 226 yards, a touchdown and an interception; Allen threw for 204 yards with two interceptions. The difference came from Buffalo finishing its late possessions on the ground while Los Angeles repeatedly left points unclaimed.

After Week 3: Buffalo remained unbeaten at 3–0. Los Angeles fell to 0–3 after its third consecutive defeat, with an improved takeaway performance still unable to compensate for missed offensive chances.
